What doesn't HOAE Study Notes cover?
- Verbal Comparison Questions
- Basic Math
- Vocational Adjustment
Why aren't these subjects covered?
- The word comparison portion of the academic aptitude section is not covered in HOAE Study Notes. This is an area that is difficult to prepare for since your success depends on the breadth of your vocabulary. The object is to compare the five given words and choose the one that does not belong. The good thing is, the exam is based on high school level vocabulary, so the words are not obscure. Examples of the type of questions you'll see are listed in the text.
- Basic math is another subject that is not covered since you can find plenty of good material to study online/at the library. Please note the use of calculators is prohibited during the exam. The good news is the math section isn’t rocket science. Know your decimals and fractions, multiplication and division properties and how to solve ratio problems. Examples of the type of questions you'll see are listed in the text. See the HOAE Study Links on the Navigation Bar for study help.
- Another section excluded is the Vocational Adjustment part of the exam. This is the section where the exam attempts to assess if you’re the right type of person to go into healthcare. I’m not sure that’s something for which you can study for. Examples of the type of questions you'll see are listed in the text.
What's the math like on the exam?
- Per PBS (the company that writes the exam), the math is on an 8th grade level, so ditch the quadratic formulas and hit ratios, proportions, word problems and basic math skills.
What is the format of the HOAE?
- The exam is divided into 5 parts to be completed within a 2½ hour period.
- Included are:
1. Academic Aptitude
· Verbal (30 questions)
· Math (30 questions)
· Analytical reasoning (30 questions)
2. Spelling (60 questions)
3. Reading Comprehension (45 questions)
4. Natural Science (65 questions)
5. Vocational Adjustment (90 questions)
Is the HOT the same test as the HOAE?
- Yes, this is the same exam, some schools use the HOT abbreviation.
Is the HOAE only for nursing? What about the Revised HOAE?
- HOAE Study Notes will prepare you for any of the HOAE exams, whether it be the standard HOAE, the Revised HOAE, the Nursing RN or LPN HOAE. The HOAE is used for a wide variety of medical science programs.
